Our mind is like a muscle. To see the world in a positive way takes training.

Positive thinking exercises are tools that we can use to train our mind to view situations from a positive perspective.

Positive thinking exercises have the power to brighten your day.

Positive thinking exercises have the power to brighten your day.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in our modern fast-paced world. Often this can lead to negative thoughts and emotions. Unhealthy eating habits can then ensue. This includes comfort eating and binge eating. But this instant gratification is short-lived. Turning to comfort food when stressed can result in unhealthy eating patterns and further health complications.

If you’re a health coach, understanding the power of the mind is key to breaking these unhealthy eating patterns.

In this post, we’ll share our top 7 positive thinking exercises that will cultivate a healthy mindset.

What Are Positive Thinking Exercises?

Positive thinking is key to overall well-being, as it:

Positive thinking exercises are rituals or behaviors that promote calmness and evoke happiness. When practiced daily, positive thinking exercises can change your outlook on life.

Next, you'll find our top 7 positive thinking exercises that you can use to bring out the best in your clients. These exercises will help promote feelings of self-worth and improve self-esteem.

1. Gratitude Journaling

Gratitude is a form of appreciation that evokes positivity. To practice gratitude is to acknowledge specific tangible aspects of your life that make you feel happy and thankful.

Gratitude journaling is the process of recording moments or events that you are grateful for on a regular basis. This simple practice will shift your perspective and improve your outlook on life. Each day, take a few moments to write down three things you're grateful for.

The habit of recording the positive aspects of your life in a daily journal has the power to remodel your brain. By doing this you will build resilience and improve happiness in your life.

Another term for this exercise is “counting your blessings.” These blessings can be big or small, ranging from a delicious cup of coffee in the morning to the love and support of friends and family.

If performed daily, gratitude journaling will shift your perspective and will foster a sense of abundance and contentment in your life.

2. Positive Affirmations

Affirmations are positive statements that you repeat to yourself regularly to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts.

Positive affirmations have the power to rewire negative thought patterns and to change your outlook in any given situation.

Having a list of affirmations that resonates with you, such as "I am worthy of love and success" or "I am capable of overcoming any challenge," is an excellent positive thinking practice to calm your negative energy. Affirmations work best when repeated daily, especially during moments of self-doubt or difficulty.

Having trouble finding the positive words that best resonate with you? Take a look at our list of 43 growth mindset affirmations. You’re sure to find a phrase or quote to motivate you.

3. Visualization

Visualization is the process of picturing the things you want or desire in your mind. During this process you focus on what it would be like if you were to attain or achieve your goals.

Visualization is a powerful technique used by athletes, performers, and other successful people around the world. The process of visualizing can take many different forms and is often associated with meditation and mindfulness. Understanding how visualization works and how you can implement it into your own life has the power to transform your life.

We love visualization as a positive thinking exercise because it requires no equipment. Just your time and your focus. If you’re new to the process, you can start by taking a few minutes each day to visualize your goals and dreams. Immerse yourself in the experience and allow yourself to feel the emotions of joy, accomplishment, and fulfillment.

Visualization not only enhances motivation but also instills a deep sense of belief in your ability to achieve your aspirations. This technique is amazing for reframing negative thoughts into positive ones, and can also be referred to as cognitive restructuring.

4. Acts of Kindness

Ever wondered why it feels so good to help someone? Research shows that performing random acts of kindness is good for our own mental health as well as the mental well-being of the recipient.

Practicing random acts of kindness not only brightens someone else's day but also uplifts your own spirits. Whether it's offering a sincere compliment, helping a stranger in need, or volunteering your time for a cause you believe in, acts of kindness foster a sense of connection and purpose. By spreading positivity to others, you create a ripple effect of goodwill that comes back to enrich your own life.

5. Surround Yourself with Positivity

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” - Jim Rohn, is more than just a famous quote.

Research has shown that we tend to become more similar in our appearance and behavior to the people we spend the most time with. This phenomenon is referred to as neural synchronization

Ideally your inner circle should be filled with uplifting individuals who inspire and support you. Do your best to surround yourself with people who have a healthy mindset and share a positive outlook on life.

Conversely, it’s important to limit your exposure to negative influences and negative people, including toxic relationships, pessimistic news or social media that evokes comparison and envy.

By surrounding yourself with positivity you will cultivate a positive environment that will nourish your soul and encourage personal growth.

6. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a powerful exercise that can soothe anxiety and calm the mind. It’s about being present in the moment, without judgment or attachment to thoughts and emotions. There are a variety of ways to include mindfulness practice in your daily routine, including:

  • Meditation
  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Mindful walk in nature
  • Relaxation
  • Grounding

Being mindful will allow you to live in the present moment. This will encourage a sense of inner peace and serenity, and you’ll free yourself from your worries and anxieties.

7. Embrace Failure as Growth

Embracing failure as growth is easier said than done. But, if you can shift your perspective, you can turn a negative outcome into a valuable learning experience. This is growth mindset 101!

By embracing failure as an opportunity to grow and learn, you’ll develop resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. This will allow you to deal with setbacks with a positive mindset, even during the most challenging times.

Bonus! Self-Care

Staying positive is difficult when you’re run down and sleep deprived. Our bonus tip is to make sure you’re on top of your self-care.

But what is self-care? The World Health Organization defines self-care as, “…the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a health worker.”

This means, making sure you’re getting enough sleep, and that you’re eating nutritious food. The best way to do this is to plan ahead. Write a shopping list, allocate time to buy your groceries and to prepare your meals.

Self-care also involves engaging in activities that bring you joy. This could be spending time with loved ones. Or attending a yoga class. Most importantly you need to make sure you look after yourself.

Summary

Cultivating positivity is not about ignoring the negative aspects of your life, or putting on rose-colored glasses. It’s about bringing optimism into your day, and training your mind to see the positive side in the midst of difficulty.

As a health coach, you’ll make the greatest impact if you can help your clients embrace a mindset of abundance, resilience and gratitude. Because a negative attitude is linked to low self-esteem and can ruin an entire day. The positive thinking exercises that we’ve shared in this post will help your clients shed any negativity they may be harboring and they’re sure to reap the health benefits from this.

To recap, the 7 positive thinking exercises we’ve covered in this post are:

  1. Gratitude journaling
  2. Positive affirmations
  3. Visualization
  4. Acts of kindness
  5. Surround yourself with positivity
  6. Practice mindfulness

Become the best mindset coach with these 15 growth mindset tips.

Understanding how to help your clients control their emotions can have a major impact on their lives. Mindset coaching gives you the tools and coaching materials needed to make the biggest impact possible.

In this post we share our top 15 growth mindset techniques to help you become an amazing mindset coach.

What Is a Mindset Coach?

Mindset coaches are the ultimate cheerleaders. They help their clients view their situations with positivity, no matter the circumstances. They do this by using growth mindset techniques, including powerful affirmations, that can transform negative thought patterns and beliefs, into positive growth and success.

Mindset coaching complements other coaching modalities such as:

  • Health coaching
  • Fitness coaching
  • Wellness coaching
  • Business coaching
  • Life coaching
  • Relationship coaching
  • Performance coaching
  • Career coaching

There are a growing number of mindset coaching certifications available online. Here are a few certified mindset coaching courses you may like to consider:

These certified courses don't have a specific health or fitness focus. Instead you will learn powerful mindset coaching strategies that can be applied to any coaching situation.

If you're looking for a health and fitness certification, check out our courses at the Primal Health Coach Institute. We offer specialist courses in the areas of health and fitness. You're sure to find a course to suit your needs.

The Role of a Mindset Coach

The role of a mindset coach is to improve their clients' lives. They do this by helping them move away from a limiting mindset. In turn, this will help them develop new perspectives and positive changes in their lives.

Mindset coaching can be applied to a variety of different life situations including:

  • Professional development
  • Career development
  • Personal development
  • Lifestyle change
  • Improve overall well-being
  • Fitness goals
  • Establish stronger emotional well-being
  • Improved health

Mindset coaches use a variety of techniques in their coaching sessions including positive reinforcement, time line therapy and hypnotherapy.

Mindset Coaching: How Does it Work?

The human mind holds great power over our actions, thoughts and beliefs. Being able to control one’s thought process and emotions has the potential to change lives. But it’s often difficult to break through these self-made barriers alone.

It’s one thing to tell someone what to do. Writing meal plans and delivering pre-made healthy food can have a positive impact in someone’s life in the short-term. But unless you help your clients change their thought process around eating and exercise, any short-term success will eventually fail.

The best mindset coaches will identify the individual needs of their clients to help them achieve sustainable lifestyle change.

Mindset coaching can be broken down into three main areas:

Shifting Limiting Beliefs

Limiting beliefs are negative thoughts, or self-doubt that can hold someone back from achieving their goals. Limiting beliefs often present as fear of failure, or the belief that you’re not worthy of achieving a particular goal. They often stem from past experiences, societal influences or an individual’s own self-doubt.

Mindset coaching can play a key role in overcoming limiting beliefs, especially when it comes to health and fitness. By using growth mindset strategies, a coach can help their clients reframe their limiting beliefs, and replace them with positive beliefs that will allow them to reach their desired health and fitness goals.

Building Resilience

A mindset coach works with their clients to build resilience and improve their motivation. When it comes to health and fitness goals, many people start off with the best intentions when their motivation is high, but after a setback, they find it difficult to continue on their health or fitness journey.

Health and fitness coaches can use mindset coaching to manage stress and maintain a positive outlook, when their clients are faced with adversity.

Building resilience is essential when establishing a new healthy habit, and achieving sustainable lifestyle change. Life comes with its ups and downs, and in order to achieve sustained lifestyle change, being able to build resilience in the face of adversity is key.

Overcoming Self-Sabotage

Self-sabotage is the term used to describe behavior that prevents someone from achieving their goals. Examples of self-sabotage include:

  • Procrastination
  • Giving up before trying
  • Perfectionism
  • Defensiveness
  • Reprioritization
  • Emotional eating
  • Negative self-talk
  • Unhealthy habits

Effective coaches will help their clients identify their self-sabotaging behavior. They will also give them tools to reframe their mindset away from their bad habits, so they can make healthier conscious choices in the future.

Top 15 Growth Mindset Tips to Help You Become the Best Mindset Coach

Growth mindset is the belief that your achievements and your success is determined by how much effort you put in. Conversely, a fixed mindset describes the belief that your intelligence and abilities are innate and unchangeable.

These two terms were first coined by Carol Dwerk who extensively researched this field of study. Dwerk also published her acclaimed book on the topic - Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, which helped bring her findings to the mainstream.

Mindset coaches use growth mindset strategies to bring positivity to any negative exisiting mindsets their clients may hold.

Being able to guide your clients towards a healthy, more positive outlook will help them achieve their goals.

Here are our top 15 growth mindset tips that will help you unlock the full potential in your clients.

  1. The word “yet” holds a lot of power. By placing  “yet” at the end of a sentence, you can completely change the meaning of the sentence. For example, “I’m not able to run 5 miles, yet.”
  2. View challenges as opportunities. By changing the language around a setback and describing it as an opportunity it allows you to learn from the experience.
  3. Set realistic goals. SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-Specific) goal setting is a simple, yet effective approach to setting goals, and it’s a highly effective way to monitor progress.
  4. Make a new goal for every goal accomplished. This will help with motivation, and will allow you to visualize the practical steps you need to take towards a future goal.
  5. Stop seeking approval from others. This means being comfortable with your own achievements and not requiring external validation.
  6. Celebrate the growth of others. Being genuinely excited about the achievement of others will help reduce jealousy and comparison.
  7. Value the process over the end result. In other words, it’s about the journey not the destination.
  8. Replace the word “failing” with the word “learning.”
  9. Acknowledge and embrace imperfections.
  10. Take ownership over your attitude. We can’t control a situation, but we can control our reaction to a situation.
  11. Provide regular opportunities for reflection. You’re not expected to be perfect, but being able to reflect on how you react or behave in a situation will help you grow.
  12. Cultivate grit. Not everything will go your way. Being able to come back after a setback will build resilience.
  13. Think realistically about time and effort. You wouldn’t try to run a marathon if you haven’t walked around the block yet. Good things take time.
  14. Reward actions, not traits. Acknowledge the little things - like making your bed in the morning, or cooking a healthy home-cooked meal. They all add up over time.
  15. Cultivate a sense of purpose. Discover your why and make healthy choices won’t feel so much of a burden.

Summary

Mindset coaches use growth mindset strategies to help their clients break through mental blocks so they can reach new heights. In this post we've shared our top 15 growth mindset tips so you can become the best mindset coach.

Are Health Coaches Legit? Boost Your Credibility as a Health Coach With These 5 Tips https://www.primalhealthcoach.com/blog/are-health-coaches-legit/ https://www.primalhealthcoach.com/blog/are-health-coaches-legit/#respond Tue, 20 Jun 2023 04:55:15 +0000 https://www.primalhealthcoach.com/?p=12980

Have you ever been asked: "Are health coaches legit?"

On face value this may seem like a forward and uninformed question, but it is a valid question to ask.

Are health coaches legit?

Are health coaches legit?

The health and wellness industry has boomed over the last decade - and so has the number of people searching for health, wellness and fitness guidance online and on social media. This interest in health and wellness has come with a surge of so-called health experts pushing their own agendas and flogging a "quick" fix weight loss shake or fitness product. Now more than ever before, it's imperative that you show your audience how "legit" you are.

With the phoneys comes the skeptics too. So how can you prove to your target audience that you are the real deal?

In this post I'll share my top five tips that will guarantee that you will come across as the expert health coach you really are. But first let's rewind and address the question of what exactly is a health coach?

What Is a Health Coach?

A health coach is an expert in healthy living. They help their clients live a healthier lifestyle through the formation of healthy habits, education and the sharing of knowledge and they do so with positive energy. Health coaches often take a holistic health approach with their clients, focusing on all aspects of a person's life, including:

  • Nutrition
  • Sleep
  • Physical activity
  • Stress
  • Play

Whilst the scope of practice of a health coach varies depending on where you live, health coaches never diagnose, prescribe or treat a disease or illness. Instead, they work alongside their clients to achieve sustainable lifestyle change. A health coach is the ultimate cheerleader when it comes to supporting personal growth and healthy living.

Health Coach Jobs

The variety of different jobs held by health coaches has evolved as the industry has evolved. There's no limit to the type of work you can do. Here's a list of health coach career options for you to consider:

  • Be your own boss and run your own private practice (either online or in-person or a combination of both).
  • Set up health and fitness initiatives as part of a corporate wellness program.
  • Run health retreats in exotic destinations.
  • Implement preventative medicine strategies for a health insurance company.
  • Work alongside other allied health care providers including family doctors, chiropractors and functional medicine doctors.

5 Tips That Will Boost Your Credibility as a Health Coach

To best address our original question: "Are health coaches legit?" you need to provide enough evidence that proves that YOU are the real deal, as many so-called health experts may not be. Here are my top five tips that will give you the credibility you deserve and will help you fill your client list and your waitlist too!

1. Become a Board-Certified Health Coach

Health coaching is an unregulated industry. Anyone can use the term "health coach" regardless of their education or experience level. And like other professions, there are amazing health coaches out there, as well as some not-so-great health coaches.

One way to help boost your credibility with future employers and potential new clients, is to become NBHWC-certified. If you're not exactly sure what this means, I'll explain it for you now.

The NBHWC (National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching) in partnership with the National Board of Medical Examiners, created the National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coaching credential (NBC-HWC). The NBC-HWC has become the gold standard in health coaching education with many employers listing this credential as a minimal requirement when advertising health coach jobs.

There are no prerequisites to becoming board certified. But there are four steps to the process and they are:

  1. Graduate from an NBHWC approved training program. Check out Primal Health Coach Institute's comprehensive program, the Master Coach Certification, which is NBHWC-approved and offers a robust science-backed curriculum.
  2. Log 50 coaching sessions (can be video coaching sessions).
  3. Hold an Associate’s degree or Bachelor's degree or complete 4000 hours of work experience.
  4. Pass a National Board Certification Exam.

2. Specialize in a Niche

Another way to assert yourself as an expert health coach, is to narrow your focus to a particular specialization or niche. It may seem crazy to focus on one specific aspect of health and wellness, especially if you're just starting your health coaching business. But, what you're actually doing is becoming a world expert in your chosen niche, and this will make your business irresistible to your ideal client.

Unsure about how to narrow down your coaching niche to a specific area? An easy way to get started is to reflect on your own health journey. What were your pain points and how did you overcome them?

For example, maybe you're a 40-something year old dad juggling work and family life with school aged children. Along the way, you discover a love for healthy cooking and a desire to share your knowledge with other busy parents with school aged kids. Your niche in this scenario could be to provide healthy and simple-to-prepare home-cooked recipes to your target audience, who, in this case would be busy dads with school aged kids.

This is just one example of how your passion and interest can help you identify your coaching niche.

Looking for inspiration for your own coaching niche? Here's a list of 16 specializations for you to consider:

  1. Weight management
  2. Athletic performance
  3. Mental health coaching
  4. Hormonal balance
  5. Women's health coaching
  6. Fitness coaching for seniors
  7. Fitness coaching for teens
  8. Strength training for women
  9. Body composition coaching
  10. Habit change coaching
  11. Health coaching for 50+ year old men
  12. Primal nutrition coaching
  13. Health coaching for pre- and postpartum moms
  14. Business support for health coaches
  15. Smoking cessation coaching
  16. Health coaching for menopausal women

Still unsure about which niche is best for you? Many health coaches hold qualifications in a complementary field. Do you? If so, have you thought about aligning your two credentials? This will give you massive points when it comes to boosting your credibility. Examples of aligned professions that complement health coaching include:

  • Fitness professionals including fitness coaching, athletic trainers and personal training
  • Nurses
  • Chiropractors
  • Nutrition science
  • Life coach
  • Wellness coach
  • Teaching
  • Business administration
  • Marketing
  • Health education

3. Upskill

"You are always a student, never a master. You have to keep moving forward." - Conrad Hall

Upskilling is a health coach's secret weapon. Investing in your knowledge and skillset as a coach will only benefit your business and increase your profits long term. Whether you choose to enroll in a business course, a marketing workshop, or a speciality health or fitness coaching course, the knowledge, experience and the networking opportunities that may arise from your upskilling will pay off.

Here at the Primal Health Coach Institute we have expanded our range of speciality courses. No matter your niche, you're sure to find a speciality course that will add to your coaching skills. Here are a few of the speciality courses that we offer:

  • Human Intestinal Microbiome in Health and Disease
  • Functional Therapeutic Diets
  • Strength Training for Women
  • Health Coaching in Medical Practices

4. Publish Client Testimonials

One of the best ways to build trust with future clients is to share client testimonials on your business website, your social media accounts and on Google reviews.

Client testimonials make you and your business appear more trustworthy and credible; they're proof that your health coaching is legit.

If you're new to coaching here's a couple of helpful tips to get you started:

  1. Ask family and friends how your health advice and guidance has supported them to reach their health goals.
  2. Use your professional network and reach out to colleagues and/or mentors to write professional testimonials for you. Hint: provide them with swipe copy so you can capture what you're looking for. As a side note, you never know what career opportunities may arise from this.

Manually collecting testimonials is consuming and can become disorganized. Here are three cost-effective (most are free) ways to capture testimonials from your happy clients:

  1. Use free online services such as Google Forms, JotForm, Survey Monkey or TypeForm to send and collect your answers. It will save time and look professional and organized.
  2. Embed a testimonial form on your website. You can do this by checking your website for a form-builder, content block or plugin that can embed your feedback form into a page on your website.
  3. Schedule a testimonial email template to be sent to your clients several weeks after they sign up to your program. This is simple to set up using Gmail business email.

5. Collaborate With Other Allied Health Professionals

Collaborating with other allied health professionals, including fellow health coaches is a fantastic way to boost your reputation as an expert health coach.

Whether you need advice on which platform is best for setting up your online coaching program, or you're seeking advice on how to use motivational interviewing with your clients. Having a community of coaches you can turn to is a major benefit.

It's not only your fellow coaches that you should connect with. Developing strong networking connections with allied health professionals will allow you to create a useful referral network, especially if they provide services that you don't offer. You will find that your allied health collaborators will refer clients to you too and vice versa. An integrative approach to health care that involves collaboration between an array of health professionals will have the best outcome for your clients.

Allied health professionals could include those in the medical profession such as primary care physicians, nurses and occupational therapists.

Chiropractors, functional medicine doctors, life coaches and wellness coaches also make great allied health partners.

And then there are the exercise physiologists, the physical therapists, the online nutritionists and the certified personal trainers that also make brilliant allied health professionals.

Summary

Health coaches play a vital role in the development of health behaviors in the general population.

So, are health coaches legit?

The answer is - yes they are! Follow my top five tips to boost your credibility as a health coach and you're guaranteed to get the credit you deserve:

  1. Become a board-certified health coach through an accredited institution
  2. Specialize in a niche
  3. Upskill
  4. Publish client testimonials
  5. Collaborate with other allied health professionals

43 Growth Mindset Affirmations to Empower Health in Your Clients https://www.primalhealthcoach.com/blog/43-growth-mindset-affirmations/ https://www.primalhealthcoach.com/blog/43-growth-mindset-affirmations/#respond Wed, 16 Nov 2022 13:20:23 +0000 https://www.primalhealthcoach.com/?p=12443

Growth mindset affirmations empower, inspire and motivate.

The human brain holds great influence over our mindset and our perspective. A positive outlook will set you up to achieve extraordinary feats. Conversely, negative and pessimistic thoughts can hinder growth and change.

Whether you’re a health coach, a life coach, a personal trainer or a teacher, understanding the power of positive thought will help guide your clients or students towards behavioral change.

It’s easy to feel positive and motivated when you’re feeling happy and content. However, motivation can falter and bad habits can set in, when an individual is faced with tough challenges and hurdles. You will find that many of your clients will seek support and guidance from you as their coach at this time. Having the best tools to support your clients towards health and happiness is a must for any successful coach. This is when affirmations can come in handy.

Affirmations are short sentences or phrases that evoke positivity and mindfulness. They have the power to manifest health, wellness and happiness, and can be implemented as a useful growth mindset tool.

In this post we explore how to use growth mindset affirmations effectively with your clients. We also share 43 positive affirmations to uplift and motivate.

Growth mindset affirmations can motivate and inspire you during the toughest challenges.
Growth mindset affirmations can motivate and inspire you during the toughest challenges.

What Is a Growth Mindset?

Growth mindset is the concept that your intelligence, talents and abilities are the result of effort and learning. Conversely, a fixed mindset is the idea that your talent alone creates your success and cannot be improved.

The theories of growth and fixed mindset were developed over 30 years ago by psychologist Dr Carol Dweck. More recently, there’s a growing awareness of these concepts outside of the world of psychology. Growth mindset techniques have been used:

Once you let go of a fixed mindset, it removes the fear and negativity that has been holding you back. By simply adding the word “yet” to a phrase, it changes its meaning and its energy.

For example: “I’m not able to do a push up…yet.” It’s power stuff.

What Are Growth Mindset Affirmations?

Growth mindset affirmations are positive words and phrases that can be used to motivate and empower. Affirmations can be used as tools to deflect negative self-talk, to build confidence, open minds and to encourage an optimistic outlook.

Daily affirmations have the greatest impact when they are embraced at least once a day, either through meditation, visualization or journaling.

Coaches can use affirmations with clients to:

  • Overcome sabotaging and negative thoughts.
  • Improve self-belief.
  • Solidify a new healthy habit.
  • Build confidence.

How to Craft a Powerful Affirmation in 5 Steps

Positive affirmations work best when they’re written to specifically address a behavior or an activity that you would like to change or improve. Here’s a 5 step guide to help you craft your own affirmations to use with your clients:

  1. Brainstorm areas of focus or improvement. These will become the basis of an affirmation. For example, a client may want to “Make the healthiest nutrition choices when dining out.”
  2. Flip a negative thought into a positive affirmation. Instead of the negative phrase: “I don’t have time to prepare and cook healthy meals,” you can flip it into a positive statement: “I make time to prepare and cook healthy meals.”
  3. Check whether your affirmation is realistic and achievable. Critically assess whether your affirmation can be achieved through SMART goal setting. If an affirmation is too far fetched it may lose its power and the words may not have a strong impact.
  4. Write your affirmation in the present tense. Powerful affirmations are written as if they are happening in the now.
  5. Say your affirmation with meaning. Believe the words in your affirmation and they will have the greatest impact.

Your 4 Step Guide to Becoming NBHWC Certified https://www.primalhealthcoach.com/blog/national-board-health-wellness-coach-nbhwc/ https://www.primalhealthcoach.com/blog/national-board-health-wellness-coach-nbhwc/#respond Wed, 19 Oct 2022 01:02:55 +0000 https://www.primalhealthcoach.com/?p=12388

If you’re serious about carving a fulfilling and rewarding career in the health and wellness space, then obtaining your NBHWC credential is a must.

Upskill your credential and become NBHWC certified.

Upskill your credential and become NBHWC certified.

But first, what is the NBHWC? And why is it so important to become a board certified health coach?

You’ll find the answers to these questions, and so much more in our four-step guide to becoming an NBHWC certified health coach.

In this article we cover the four major requirements that you must achieve in order to become board-certified. These include:

  1. Graduate from an NBHWC approved training program.
  2. Log 50 health coaching sessions.
  3. Complete higher education/work experience requirements.
  4. Pass the National Board Certification Exam.

Let's get into it!

What Is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach?

National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coaches (NBC-HWC) have sat the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) exam. This is the highest standard in the profession of health coaching.

Prospective employers and future clients look for coaches holding a NBHWC credential, as it represents the pinnacle in health coaching.

But how did it all begin?

The NBHWC is a non profit organization that was established in 2016. Their aim was to define and develop professional standards for health and wellness professionals in partnership with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). These standards were developed by industry experts, and form the basis of the NBC-HWC credential.

There's currently no requirement for health coaches to become certified in the United States. But, many jobs in the healthcare sector require board certification upon application.

The skills acquired from the NBC-HWC credential are desirable for healthcare professionals outside of the coaching space. Certified personal trainers, nurses and health education workers are just a few allied health professionals that will benefit from the NBHWC credential.

Your 4 Step Guide to Becoming NBHWC Certified

Becoming an NBHWC certified coach takes time and planning. If you're feeling a little unsure about how to start the process, then we have you covered.

Here's our 4 step guide to becoming board certified:

1. Graduate From an NBHWC Approved Training Program

Your first step towards becoming a board certified coach is to graduate from an NBHWC Approved Training Program. All NBHWC-approved schools meet the minimum required training and education standards in the areas of:

  • Instructional hours.
  • Practical skill development and assessment.
  • Faculty qualifications in health and wellness.

There are over 138 NBHWC approved training programs to choose from. Many of which are offered as online courses. Each school will have their own unique focus and course content. Choose a school that aligns with your health and wellness values. Look for excellent instruction and guidance too.

2. Log 50 Coaching Sessions

All board certified health coaches are required to provide a coaching log of 50 health and wellness coaching sessions.

The guidelines for these coaching sessions include:

  • Duration, each coaching session must be at least 20 minutes.
  • They can be facilitated either in person, over the phone or using video conferencing. (Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc).
  • 75% of each coaching session must be devoted to coaching facilitation and not education.
  • Coaching sessions must not be with friends, family or current classmates.
  • Coaching sessions can be retroactively listed up to 7 years prior to sitting the NBC-HWC exam.

3. Complete Higher Education/Work Experience Requirements

Before sitting your board certifying exam, you must provide evidence of either:

  • Graduation from an associate's degree or higher (in any field).
  • At least 4000 hours of work experience (in any field).

4. Pass a National Board Certification Exam

In order to qualify to sit the NBC-HWC exam you must first complete steps 1-3. Exams are held at approved testing locations worldwide, several times a year.

The exam itself consists of 150 multiple choice questions that are to be completed in a four and a half hour time period. The exam focuses on four key concepts:

  • Coaching structure, your ability to prepare and manage each stage of a coaching session.
  • Coaching process, your ability to use core health coaching competencies with your clients.
  • Health and wellness, your knowledge of health behaviors, chronic disease and related topics.
  • Ethical and legal considerations relating to health coaching.

Here's three informative NBHWC exam resources you may find helpful:

Upon successful completion of all 4 steps (including passing your exam) you will earn your NBC-HWC credential.

To maintain your NBC-HWC status, 36 continuing education credits are required every three years. These can be obtained by completing approved continuing education courses.

Fitness coaches attract clients based on their interests and their niche. Your ideal client wants you to coach them. Whether you’re over 50, under 30, male, female or LGBTQIA+, have muscles like Arnie or not so much, it doesn’t matter. As long as you’re relatable to your target audience, they will want you to help them reach their fitness goals.

If your passion is to help your clients move better, build strength and enjoy their fitness, then it’s up to you, to arm yourself with the skills and knowledge to help them achieve their fitness goals. In this post, we’ll explore our top 5 reasons why becoming a fitness coach is the best choice for you.

What Is a Fitness Coach?

A fitness coach mentors and guides their clients towards their fitness goals using a series of strategies including:

  • Teaching movement techniques to prevent injury
  • Developing personalized programming to keep fitness fun and engaging
  • Motivating and encouraging clients to achieve their goals
  • Tracking progress
  • Providing accountability to keep clients focused on the long game

Fitness coaches work in gyms, functional fitness studios, health clubs, recreation centers, yoga studios, in private practice and online.

The job outlook for fitness professionals is promising. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the fitness industry is projected to grow 39 percent from 2020-2030; well above the average for all occupations in the United States.

Fitness coaches currently find employment in a wide variety of areas within the fitness industry, including:

  • One-on-one coaching
  • Group fitness classes
  • Online coaching

Fitness coaches can also be referred to as fitness instructors, and they work with their clients to achieve an array of different goals, including:

  • Weight loss
  • Injury rehab
  • Enhanced performance in elite athletes
  • Stress management
  • Increased strength
  • Improved cardiovascular fitness
  • Greater general health and fitness

If you’re interested in a career change, or looking to up-skill with a fitness certification, now is the perfect time to explore what a career as a fitness coach would look like for you.

Top 5 Reasons You Should Become a Fitness Coach

There’s so much more to being a fitness coach than simply teaching your clients how to squat with good technique. Here are our top 5 reasons you should become a fitness coach:

1. Earn Your Living Doing What You Love

Wouldn’t it be nice to actually enjoy going to work. To spend your days in your happy place and making a living out of it? If you’re someone who loves working out and helping others, then being a fitness coach would be a fantastic career choice for you.

Sharing your love for fitness with your clients feels pretty amazing. There’s nothing better than hearing that your client’s favorite hour of their day was working out with you.

2. Accountability for Your Own Training

Motivation has its ups and downs, even for fitness coaches. When your clients show up and put in the work. it gives you extra drive to exercise when your motivation is low.

As a fitness coach myself, it would feel unauthentic to expect my clients to get their heart pumping when I’m not doing it myself. Knowing that my clients look up to me provides me with the accountability I need to put in the work and prioritize movement into my life.

3. Flexible Work Hours

If you’re looking for flexible work hours, then fitness coaching may be a great fit for you. Many coaches work “out of hours” to accommodate the standard 9-5 work schedule held by their clients. This often involves working early mornings and late nights, with large periods of “free time” in the middle of the day. You can use this time to work on your own fitness, or you may fill it with other commitments, such as family time or working another job.

4. Boost Your Earning Potential

Holding a fitness certification alongside a health or wellness credential is likely to boost your earning potential.

Potential clients are looking for a coach that has a well-rounded knowledge-base to help them achieve sustainable lifestyle change. Having credentials in both health and fitness coaching gives you credibility in the eyes of your prospective clients, and should give you the confidence to charge accordingly.

5. Being a Fitness Coach Is Fulfilling

As a fitness coach you build a unique rapport with each of your clients. They confide in you, they share their fears and their dreams with you, so when they smash their own goals, there is no other feeling like it. When you help your client break through their own perceived barriers it feels pretty awesome.

Fitness Coach Credentials

We’ve discussed our top 5 reasons why you should become a fitness coach. Now it’s time to explain how you can become one.

Many fitness coaches hold a fitness credential (often more than one). These certifications can be in the broad field of “fitness” or they can be a specialized qualification in a niche area of fitness such as:

  • Yoga
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Weightlifting
  • Senior’s fitness
  • Aqua aerobics
  • Gymnastics
  • CrossFit
  • Children’s fitness

A fitness coach certification does not make you a personal trainer (which is a separate qualification, usually an associate and bachelor degree). This is not to say that a fitness coach does not also hold a personal training qualification (I do). In fact, many fitness coaches also hold other health, fitness and wellness credentials in fields such as:

  • Personal training
  • Health coaching
  • Nutrition coaching
  • Massage therapy
  • Exercise science
  • Physical education
  • Kinesiology

When deciding on what fitness coaching course to invest your time and money into, it’s important to choose wisely. Ask yourself the following questions:

“What type of fitness do you enjoy?”

Who would be your ideal client to coach?

Answering these two questions will help you define your coaching and client niche, which will help you decide on the direction of your studies and your coaching practice.

How to Manifest Health in Your Clients https://www.primalhealthcoach.com/blog/how-to-manifest-health-in-your-clients/ Fri, 24 Jun 2022 13:07:42 +0000 https://www.primalhealthcoach.com/?p=10943 Is it possible to manifest health? That’s the topic of today’s post. But first, what does it mean to manifest?

Manifesting, also known as the laws of attraction, is the power to turn your dreams into reality by adapting your mindset and behaviors.

Whilst there’s limited scientific evidence to link manifesting with positive outcomes, adopting a growth mindset is proven to bring on behavorial change; a fundamental element necessary for creating a new healthy lifestyle.

In this post you will find 5 growth mindset strategies that will help your clients manifest good health and happiness. Read on to learn more.

The Origins of Manifesting

The origins of manifesting can be traced back to ancient Buddhist transcripts.

“All that we are is a result of what we have thought.” – Buddha

In the 19th century, the Laws of Attraction (manifesting) gained popularity as one of the pillars of the New Thought movement.

In 2006, the bestselling self-help book “The Secret” written by Rhonda Byrne, brought manifesting into popular culture, selling over 30 million copies, and spawning a Hollywood movie by the same name.

More recently, a new wave of manifesting enlightenment has gained momentum on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram. This latest manifesting resurgence is led by Gen Z influencers as a way to navigate mental health issues associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The power of the human mind has been held in high regard for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Manifesting techniques have been used throughout history in the hope of manifesting money, wealth, love and perfect health.

No one can deny the power of positive thought, and if we scratch below the surface you will find that there’s more to manifesting than simply wishful thinking. In fact, if we break down the key elements of manifestation, they look very much like a well-established and scientifically-proven strategy to achieve lasting behavioral change. Ever heard of growth mindset?

The Importance of Having a Growth Mindset

Growth mindset techniques have hit the mainstream. They’re now used in schools, by elite sports teams, by entrepreneurs, and even large organisations such as Apple and GE.

A growth mindset is the belief that growth and success is the result of effort and learning, and was first proposed by psychologist Carol Dweck. Growth mindset principles place emphasis on the journey rather than the destination and have been proven to:

  • Boost motivation
  • Heighten resilience
  • Increase enjoyment in learning
  • Improve the likelihood of reaching your goal

Sustained behavioral change is something we as health coaches aspire to achieve with our clients. Interestingly, manifesting principles and growth mindset strategies share several similarities, and if used correctly, can lead to the formation of healthy new habits that actually stick. Manifest Health With These 5 Proven Growth Mindset Techniques

The power of thought is central to both growth mindset and manifestation concepts. Here, we’ll explore 5 proven growth mindset strategies that will help your clients manifest health and happiness:

1. Set SMART Goals

The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan.

SMART goal setting can be hugely impactful on your clients’ success.

The SMART acronym stands for:

  • Specific: Target a specific area of your client’s health
  • Measurable: Identify how you’re going to quantify successful completion of your goal
  • Achievable: Assess whether this goal is feasible
  • Realistic: Is this goal achievable?
  • Time: Set a defined endpoint for your goal

Let’s take a look at how SMART goal setting works, using a hypothetical client example.

Hypothetical client goal: To lose 20 pounds before their wedding in 6 months.

Your client’s main goal is to lose weight for their wedding in 6 months. A holistic health assessment of your client’s lifestyle identifies that they lead a stressful, sedentary life.

As their health coach you recommend they incorporate more low intensity movement (walking) into their daily routine.

Here’s what this new SMART goal would look like:

  • Specific: Daily 15 minute walk
  • Measurable: Track steps using Strava
  • Achievable: Yes, it is feasible for your client to walk daily, either during their work lunch break, or immediately after they wake up in the morning
  • Realistic: Yes
  • Time: 21 days

Research shows that a new behavior can take anywhere from 18-254 days to become a bonafide new habit. Why 21 days? Because 21 days (or three weeks) is a manageable length of time for a client to commit to (in the first instance). You can always check-in with their adherence and make adjustments as needed, like lengthening or shortening their walk time.

Why do we like SMART goal setting? Because SMART goal setting breaks down a goal into actionable small steps. It emphasizes the performance of a task (daily walk) instead of fixating purely on the outcome (to lose weight).

2. Use Positive Affirmations

Affirmations are positive statements used to empower and motivate. Health coaches, personal trainers and life coaches use positive affirmations with their clients to help them overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. Psychologists use positive affirmations with patients to treat mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.

Research has shown that affirmations can:

Affirmations can be used with your clients to help reinforce positive thoughts. They are most effective when repeated on a daily basis (or even several times a day), whether in thought, as a visualization exercise or when journaling.

Affirmations are usually short bold statements that leave no room for negative thoughts. Here are 5 affirmations that are sure to bring out the best in your clients:

  1. I can do this!
  2. I am resilient.
  3. I am proud of myself.
  4. I am bringing a positive attitude to my eating habits.
  5. I am honest to myself and others.

Positive thought can make you feel unstoppable and is essential for sustainable lifestyle change. Affirmations are a proven growth mindset strategy that will help your clients stay motivated through the ups and downs of their health journey. Or in other words, affirmations will help your clients manifest better health.

3. Meditate

Improved focus, calm mood and positive thoughts. These can all be achieved through mediation. Our modern world is filled with distractions, and our attention span is shorter than ever before. When we live in a world with tailored marketing campaigns designed to tantalize our tastebuds, having a tool to help your clients stick to their goals and focus on making the healthiest nutrition choices is hugely beneficial. As a health coach, being able to teach your clients a few basic mediation strategies can be a handy strategy to help them stay motivated to make the healthiest lifestyle choices.

But firstly, what is mediation?

Mediation is a set of techniques that promote a heightened state of awareness and focused attention. These techniques include deep breathing and practicing mindfulness (living in the moment). There are plenty of meditation apps available online that can guide your clients through a calming meditation practice. These include Calm, Down Dog and Headspace.

A daily 15 minute meditation session has the power to improve mood, enhance cognitive function and boost confidence. Incorporating meditation into your client’s daily routine is likely to help them stick to their other healthy habits and in turn help them to manifest psychological and physical health.

4. Visualize

Visualization is a powerful growth mindset concept you can use to help manifest health in your clients. Research has shown that imagining something can be just as impactful on many areas of your brain, as actually experiencing it. The more real you can make your visualization, the more impact it will have.

Sports psychologists use visualization techniques with injured elite athletes to maintain skills and fitness as well as aid in the healing process.

Visualization can be incorporated into your client’s meditation practice, and has the power to help them let go of any limiting beliefs and feel better about themselves.

5. Embrace Challenges

The growth mindset philosophy does not see failure as something to fear, but rather as an opportunity to learn and grow. By simply removing guilt and shame you will find there’s no need to “get back on the band wagon” because you never fell off!

If your client comes to you distressed about an indulgent weekend getaway filled with booze, fast food and processed sugar-laden treats. You can use this as an opportunity to help them learn and grow. Start by asking them how they felt before, during and after their vacation. Together, you and your client identify that the excessive indulgences didn’t bring the feelings of joy that were anticipated beforehand, and they certainly didn’t outweigh the insomnia, the throbbing headache and the churning stomach that lingered for several days afterwards.

In this example, your client learnt that excessive unhealthy choices do not bring joy while on vacation, and it’s unlikely that they will make those unhealthy decisions on their next weekend away. Upon reflection, your client is grateful for their learning experience, and this will help them to make healthier choices in the future, and in turn, manifest good health.

Recap

In this post, we have outlined 5 growth mindset strategies to help you manifest health in your clients, including:

  1. Set SMART goals
  2. Use positive affirmations
  3. Meditate
  4. Visualize
  5. Embrace Challenges

Help your clients become the change they want to be, and manifest their health using growth mindset concepts today!
